A back pressure regulator (BPR) is a type of valve that maintains a defined pressure upstream of its inlet. When fluid pressure within the BPR’s inlet exceeds a setpoint, the regulator opens up to remove the excess pressure.
A pressure regulator is designed to reduce the incoming pressure to a specific lower pressure at the outlet, maintaining the downstream pressure. A back pressure regulator works in the opposite direction, regulating pressure coming through the inlet by opening up only as much as necessary to maintain the desired upstream pressure.
The back pressure regulator symbol P&ID is a graphical representation of the valve, used to give an easy indication of the device’s location so that engineers don’t need to perform a physical inspection.
In process flow diagrams, back pressure regulators are depicted using a circular symbol containing an arrow that points upward.
Capital X Panel Designer speeds up your P&ID drawing process by providing a library of pre-made symbols. All you have to do is drag and drop the back pressure regulator P&ID symbol into your drawing. With this easy-to-use electrical CAD software, you will enjoy a big boost to your productivity.
