What is a Lightning Arrestor?

A lightning arrestor is a device used to protect electrical appliances from lightning strikes. They are typically found along power lines located outside of a residence, usually next to transformers, installed between the line and the earth, and working in parallel with the other components of the substation. The arrestor appears as a spiral-shaped metal device placed on the line to protect the nearby electrical system.

Similar Devices

Flame Arrestor: A safety device designed to prevent the transmission of flames through flammable gas or vapor mixtures. It allows the free flow of gases but interrupts or prevents the passage of a flame, thereby protecting equipment and processes from explosions.

Detonation Arrestor: A type of flame arrestor fitted to the opening of an enclosure or the connecting pipe work of a system of enclosures. Its primary function is to allow flow but prevent the transmission of flame propagating at supersonic velocity.

How Does a Lightning Arrestor Work?

When a lightning bolt strikes an arrestor, it diverts the abnormally high voltage away from or around the home and into the ground, ensuring the electrical supply remains unaffected.

What is the Electrical Symbol for a Lightning Arrestor?

The lightning arrestor electrical symbol is a graphical representation of the device used to provide engineers a concise reference for its position within the circuit without requiring a physical examination.

It is depicted as a rectangle (the arrestor) with an arrow pointing down (the direction of the voltage) into it.
